Millions of people die each year from smoking. This 3D medical animation is part of an anti-smoking campaign ad, showing how smoking causes normal alveolar sacs to become enlarged and thinned over time from emphysema. Because the alveoli cannot contract, air is trapped in the lungs and the smoker cannot breathe out effectively.

A Chart Showing Some of the Chemicals and Additives Contained in a Normal Cigarette

The list of 599 additives approved by the US Government for use in the manufacture of cigarettes is something every smoker should see. Submitted by the five major American cigarette companies to the Dept. of Health and Human Services in April of 1994, this list of ingredients had long been kept a secret.

Tobacco companies reporting this information were:

American Tobacco Company
Brown and Williamson
Liggett Group, Inc.
Philip Morris Inc.
R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company

While these ingredients are approved as additives for foods, they were not tested by burning them, and it is the burning of many of these substances which changes their properties, often for the worse. Over 4000 chemical compounds are created by burning a cigarette, many of which are toxic and/or carcinogenic. Carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, hydrogen cyanide and ammonia are all present in cigarette smoke. Forty-three known carcinogens are in mainstream smoke, sidestream smoke, or both.

It’s chilling to think about not only how smokers poison themselves, but what others are exposed to by breathing in the secondhand smoke. The next time you’re missing your old buddy, the cigarette, take a good long look at this list and see them for what they are: a delivery system for toxic chemicals and carcinogens.

Cigarettes offer people only a multitude of smoking-related diseases and ultimately death.

Would you rather be an ex-smoker that craves cigarettes – or a non-smoker who never gives them a thought?

We think we know the answer – but read on to find out why ‘10 Steps to Become a Non-Smoker‘ will enable you to stop smoking for good, and never crave another cigarette.

Most smokers have experienced it more than once. Several weeks down the road to quitting for good, then…

One slip and all that effort wasted

All those good intentions made; cravings resisted; plans laid and for what?

A few weeks off the cigarettes.

And every time, it seems like it’s OK to do it. But why?

Because addiction is very clever, that’s why, and it works at an unconscious level.

So however strong your conviction is to start with, addiction waits until you are at a ‘low’ point, and then strikes.

And suddenly you find yourself making up the most incredibly creative reasons for why it’s OK to have ‘just that one’.

So how can you stay stopped?

There is a profound difference between a smoker that has stopped smoking and a non-smoker. The smoker courageously resists having a cigarette, while the non-smoker couldn’t think of anything worse than smoking.

You’ve probably heard those people who quit smoking 10 years ago and still say “Every time I have a beer I still want a cigarette” – if you are trying to stop smoking that is a terrifying thing to hear!

But it simply means is that they only quit smoking at a conscious level – that is they decided to stop, and stopped. Unconsciously, smoking is still an attractive prospect for them.

From the Psychotherapist: Dr. Randy Gilchrist on Hypnosis for Quitting

In your practice, you use hypnosis as one tool to help people quit smoking. Is this effective? If so, why would something like hypnosis work for something like this?

I have found hypnosis to be highly effective in helping my clients stop smoking. In fact, traditionally, clinical hypnosis has shown to be the most popular and helpful with two main issues: smoking cessation and weight loss. Because many smokers fear that they will gain weight if they quit, a good hypnosis program for smoking cessation should include a component on weight loss as well. This is like “killing two birds with one stone.”

I think hypnosis works so well with smoking cessation because habits and addictions in general tend to be very psychological in nature. Among other things, hypnosis helps to change and improve the way a person thinks about his or her “problem.” It also helps people gain greater access to the tools and resources they’ll need during the change process. In fact, many of my clients acknowledge at the beginning that their habit/addiction is “mostly psychological” and that they just need to “change the way they think about it.”

Is there any research supporting that the hypnosis you use is effective for smoking cessation? If so, please go into some detail and tell us where to find this information.

Yes. In fact, a great deal of research shows hypnosis to be highly effective with smoking cessation in general. The main studies I usually refer to come from the main reference book from The American Society of Clinical Hypnosis, Handbook of Hypnotic Suggestions and Metaphors by D. Corydon Hammond. This book cites multiple studies showing about a 2/3 (60-67%) success rate with smoking cessation when a 4-5+ session hypnosis format is used (versus a 25% success rate when only 1 hypnosis session is used). In short, more hypnosis sessions = much higher results. This complementary, multi-session hypnosis format is what I base my program, The Non-Smoker’s Edge, on (although my program actually contains 9 hypnosis sessions).

This 2/3 success rate for the multiple hypnosis session approach is far higher than all other research-based approaches to quitting smoking. Nicotine replacement methods, the anti-depressant medication Zyban, and behavior modification techniques have all consistently yielded success rates of just 25%.

There are many current and past research articles supporting the use of hypnosis with smoking cessation. Some great websites reviewing these articles from professional journals can be found at:

For more reader-friendly reviews, I recommend searching the smoking and hypnosis-related articles on the Psychology Today archive database. Their website is http://www.psychologytoday.com.

Randy Gilchrist, Psy.D., is a fully qualified psychotherapist with a masters degree and license in marriage and family therapy, and a doctoral degree and license in clinical psychology. He specializes in strategic multi-session hypnosis programs for complex issues such as smoking cessation, and is the creator of The Non-Smoker’s Edge, published by The Hypnosis Network.

We are impressed by the research on hypnosis for quitting smoking. This is because we have seen that the long term success rate of hypnosis eclipses that of other methods. And right now the Hypnosis Network is offering a great deal for our readers – $50 off the regular price. You can get the whole program (7 CDs) for only $99.

quit smoking report

How many inner arguments have you had with yourself about your smoking habit? How many times have you mentioned to family and friends that you want to quit but seem to continue to smoke away despite the risks and the cost? And how many programs have you tried that just flopped? If you are like most people struggling with smoking, you will remember such conversations and inner dialogs and may have felt nothing will really succeed for you. Unless you tried NLP and hypnosis to quit smoking, you may have been on target.

If you sincerely want to stop smoking, neurolinguistic therapy with hypnosis is the rational choice for true success. Hypnotherapy to quit smoking can zone in on the main reasons that keep you smoking as well as equipping you with resources and boost to be successful for good. This is not a mere parlor trick, but a reputable therapy approved by the AMA since 1958, and one with recognized certification and a strong code of ethics.

Treatment with hypnosis does not contradict personal morals and a reputable hypnotherapist will respect your privacy and rights just the same as any other medical professional. You do desire a professional who is certified by the National Guild of Hypnotists and who adheres to their stringent code of ethics and professional conduct. Included in their code is putting the mental and physical welfare of clients uppermost. They also protect clients from verbal, mental or physical, and refer any client as required.

A well trained hypnotherapist has the training to address problem behavior, and hypnotherapy to stop smoking is the second most frequent type they practice. Using methods that are considered state of the art which may include the precision of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) and the ongoing support of CD’s for stop smoking hypnosis as well as any physician directed approaches a doctor might also suggest for a patient. Using hypnosis does not mean other measures are prohibited, but they may not even be needed at all.

The reason that skillfully used smoke cessation hypnotherapy is the most effective method to attain success is that it addresses the three basic concerns in smoking. No method can work that does not address each issue fully and correct the problems each causes. Most people believe that the physical addiction to nicotine is the most important aspect and the worst problem, but this is simply not factual. If the addiction to the substance called nicotine were the only reason for failure, most smokers would not fail multiple times in their efforts to stop smoking for good.

Yes, nicotine is a terribly addictive substance and for most smokers the physical compulsion is very real and there are withdrawal sensations that are also real. But did you know these last only a short time? In fact, every bit of nicotine is metabolized out of the system in just 72 hours or less! For many smokers, it is the fear of withdrawal symptoms and not the reality that causes the most suffering and which may prevent even attempting to quit. Yet quitting without training has an average 5% success rate! Stop smoking hypnotherapy reduces fear of withdrawal distresses and mitigates the effect of any that do occur.

Another component of smoking cigarettes is that it provides comfort and calming, just as using a pacifier soothes and calms an infant. Many people treat stress and anxiety with some form of oral activity like smoking cigarettes or eating. Hypnotic relaxation can substitute for the comfort factor obtained from smoking cigarettes, which reduces the cravings and produces stop smoking benefits instead. The mind can be trained to substitute the same sensations from other activities that are positive, not negative. NLP techniques can teach the brain to remove any association between smoking cigarettes and comfort.

Finally, part of the smoking habit is plain old Pavlovian conditioning. Smokers learn to link smoking with certain activities, from the movie cliché of smoking immediately after physical relations to having a cigarette while having a beer or cocktail or viewing television or talking on the phone. Here hypnosis to stop smoking can permanently delete the connection, and when the link is no longer present, there will be no trigger to light up when the coffee is poured or the cocktail is served. The mind is trained to associate good things with the former triggers, or to recall the advantages of quitting or the negatives of the tobacco.

A highly qualified hypnotherapist will use both negative and positive associations to replace conditioned associations with smoking, selecting those most meaningful for an individual patient. Stop smoking hypnosis is the only technique that can precision tune the treatment to each of the three factors in smoking and eliminate them. Everyone quitting requires support, but only stop smoking hypnosis programs effectively make you your own support team.
